The 90-day window: how to tell promises from real progress

The 90-day window is a check you do every 90 days: where did we say we’d be, and where are we really?

Measure progress. Not promises.
What it replaces

just be patient.

it’ll happen. i promise.

why are you always keeping score?

Example lines, made up for illustration.

The idea

  • Feelings can hide a lack of progress for a very long time. A date on the calendar can’t.
  • A regular check turns vague hopes into something you can see. Did anything actually move on what they say they want?
  • At work, if nothing changed for a year, someone would notice. Your life deserves the same honesty.

Your move

  • Every 90 days, write down what you both said you wanted and what really happened.
  • If it’s about 80% there and there’s a real roadblock, give it more time. It’s about progress, not perfection.
  • Keep doing it after the first year, so a healthy relationship stays healthy.

To be fair

This isn’t about keeping score on each other. It’s about measuring what you’re building together, and it works best when you both know you’re doing it.

Questions

Is the 90-day window about ending relationships?

No. Most couples use it to see their progress and feel good about it. It only shows what’s already true.

What if we’re not moving because of a real problem?

Then name the problem and set a new 90 days. A real roadblock deserves an extension. No movement and no reason, again and again, is the thing to notice.
