The Loyalty Trap: why manipulative people go for the most loyal person

The Loyalty Trap is when someone takes your best qualities, like being loyal, honest and dedicated, and turns them into rules that only you have to follow.

Still loyal. Just not to you.
What it can sound like

a loyal person wouldn’t do that.

i thought you were different.

real friends don’t walk away.

Example lines, made up for illustration.

The idea

  • They don’t go for people who are weak. They go for people who are loyal, honest and committed, because those people stay.
  • Then your best qualities become the rulebook. You have to be loyal. They don’t have to give any back.
  • Pulling back starts to feel like betraying who you are, so you feel like you’re losing yourself instead of just stepping away.

Your move

  • Ask one question: is this loyalty going both ways? Look at what they’ve done, not what they’ve said.
  • Keep your loyalty. Give it to people and goals that give it back.
  • Write down who you decided to be before this person, so you have something to come back to.

To be fair

Taking your loyalty back from someone who doesn’t return it does not make you disloyal. You keep every good quality you have.

Questions

Does pulling away make me a bad person?

No. Loyalty that only goes one way isn’t loyalty, it’s a rule you’re being held to. Stepping back protects your good qualities, it doesn’t break them.

Why do good people get caught in this?

Because the things that make you good, like patience and commitment, are the same things that keep you in place. It says nothing bad about you.
